Description
1928 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Piece, PCGS MS-64. This attractive example of the 1928 Indian Head Quarter Eagle represents a notably scarcer date in the final years of this iconic series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 416,000 pieces, the 1928 has proven more elusive in higher grades than many collectors anticipate. While lower Mint State examples are obtainable, specimens at the MS-64 level are considerably more difficult to locate than those of the more readily available 1926 and 1927 issues. Gems and finer examples are genuinely scarce, with relatively few specimens grading better than MS-65 known to exist. Technical Details and Appearance. The coin displays the hallmark characteristics of the Bela Lyon Pratt design, struck in 90% gold composition and weighing 4.18 grams. This PCGS-graded example exhibits the typically attractive qualities associated with the 1928 date, featuring frosty surfaces, excellent luster, and the characteristic light to medium gold coloration with greenish tinting common to the issue. The strike is generally well-executed with sharp definition throughout the design elements, though as with many examples from this year, minor striking anomalies may be present at the borders. Rarity and Significance. The 1928 represents an increasingly important date for serious Indian Head Quarter Eagle collectors seeking to complete high-grade sets. The scarcity of MS-64 and finer examples, combined with the historical significance of these final years of the Indian Head design before the series' discontinuation in 1929, makes this an attractive offering. The coin's certified status with PCGS provides confidence in its grade and authenticity. Certification: PCGS MS-64, Certificate #55900878
