Description

1928 Indian Head $2 1/2 Gold Coin, PCGS MS-64. This Philadelphia-minted quarter eagle represents a key date in the final years of the Indian Head $2 1/2 series. Struck to a mintage of 416,000 pieces, the 1928 is notably scarcer than its immediate predecessors (1926-1927) and considerably more difficult to locate in higher grades. The present example, certified by PCGS as MS-64, places it well above the typical circulated or lower Mint State specimens commonly encountered in the market. The 1928 is recognized as particularly elusive in MS-64 condition, with gems (MS-65 and above) representing a very small percentage of known survivors. This example displays the characteristic frosty surfaces and robust luster typical of well-preserved specimens from this issue, with coloration ranging from light to medium gold, often exhibiting the greenish tint frequently seen on 1928 coinage. The coin is generally well-struck, though some specimens from this date exhibit minor striking anomalies, particularly at the borders. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this quarter eagle contains approximately 0.121 troy ounces of pure gold. The reeded edge and crisp strike are hallmarks of Bela Lyon Pratt's enduring Indian Head design, which graced these diminutive but highly collectible coins from 1908 through 1929. An attractive addition to any pre-1933 gold collection, particularly for specialists pursuing complete date runs of this popular series. PCGS Certification #55900878
