Description
1928 Philadelphia $2 1/2 Indian Head Gold Coin, PCGS MS-64. This 1928-P Quarter Eagle represents a significant offering from the final years of the Indian Head $2 1/2 series. Designed by the renowned Bela Lyon Pratt, this classic gold coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams with a diameter of 18mm and reeded edge. The Philadelphia Mint produced 416,000 examples that year, yet high-quality survivors remain notably elusive in the modern market. The MS-64 grade is particularly noteworthy for the 1928 date. While lower Mint State examples are obtainable, this issue proves considerably more difficult to locate in MS-64 condition than many collectors anticipate. The 1928 is recognized as slightly scarcer overall than its 1926 and 1927 counterparts, with gem-quality specimens (MS-65 and above) being very scarce to rare. Relatively few examples better than MS-65 are known to exist, making superior grades genuinely exceptional. Examples from this vintage typically display attractive Mint State characteristics with frosty surfaces and excellent luster. Striking is generally well-executed, with color ranging from light to medium gold with greenish tints, though some specimens exhibit lighter rose-colored gold. Minor striking anomalies occasionally appear, most noticeably at the borders. This piece represents a solid representative of the series during its final production years, with strong eye appeal and significant collector demand. PCGS Certification #55900878
