Description

1868 Liberty Seated Half Dime, Philadelphia Mint. This exceptional 1868-P half dime represents a significant offering from the final years of the Liberty Seated series. Graded PCGS MS-67 (Certification #45301390), this coin exhibits the sharp striking and lustrous surfaces characteristic of premium Philadelphia Mint coinage from this era. The obverse displays Lady Liberty in full seated pose with shield and liberty pole, while the reverse features a wreath encircling the denomination, both rendered with crisp detail befitting the grade. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, this diminutive treasure weighs 1.24 grams and measures 15.9mm in diameter with the distinctive reeded edge. Designed by James Barton Longacre, the Liberty Seated motif represents one of numismatics' most iconic and enduring designs. The 1868 Philadelphia issue carries a modest mintage of just 88,600 pieces, making it scarce in absolute terms and particularly elusive in high grades. The significance of this particular specimen cannot be overstated—it represents one of only three examples graded by PCGS at this level, with no finer specimens known to exist. This remarkable rarity in MS-67 condition positions it among the finest survivors of the date and mint. The current guide value of $6,000 reflects the strong collector demand for premium Liberty Seated half dimes, particularly those representing the final years of this beloved series before the transition to the Barber design in 1892.
