Description
1971-D Eisenhower Dollar, PCGS MS-67. This exceptional example of the 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar represents a significant piece of modern American coinage history. Graded PCGS MS-67 (Certificate #25696091), this coin exemplifies the superior striking quality that distinguished Denver Mint issues from their Philadelphia counterparts. The 1971-D entered production several weeks before Philadelphia's inaugural strike, and Denver's older presses paradoxically produced coins with sharper definition, cleaner surfaces, and superior luster—characteristics evident in this high-grade specimen. The Eisenhower Dollar series was conceived as a memorial to President Dwight D. Eisenhower following his death in 1969. Authorized by the Bank Holding Company Act Amendments of 1970, the denomination marked the reintroduction of the American dollar coin after a 35-year hiatus. The 1971-D boasts an impressive mintage of 68,587,424 pieces and features Frank Gasparro's iconic reverse design depicting an eagle landing on the moon—a design that also honored the Apollo 11 mission. The obverse, based on work by Michael Collins and James Cooper, presents Eisenhower in profile. Composed of 75% copper with a 25% nickel cladding over a pure copper center, this coin weighs 22.7 grams and measures 38.5mm in diameter with a reeded edge. The MS-67 grade places this example well above typical circulated examples and even most uncirculated survivors. Population data indicates only 14 coins graded higher out of 89 total PCGS submissions, underscoring the rarity of superior-condition 1971-D dollars. The combination of excellent strike quality, lustrous surfaces, and exceptional preservation makes this an outstanding example for the advanced Eisenhower Dollar collector.
