Description
1936-S Buffalo Nickel, PCGS MS-67. This exceptional example of the 1936-S nickel represents the finest quality from San Francisco's production that year. Designed by the renowned James Earle Fraser, this Buffalo nickel displays the characteristic sharp strike typical of the San Francisco Mint facility, with crisp details on both the Indian portrait obverse and the American bison reverse. The coin exhibits the desirable grey brilliant luster that collectors seek in this series, a hallmark of quality preservation from this era. The 1936-S is notably scarce in gem mint state condition, despite a substantial original mintage of nearly 15 million pieces. While common in lower grades, the scarcity increases dramatically in the higher ranges, making this MS-67 example particularly significant. With only 32 examples graded finer by PCGS and just 148 total submissions, this coin represents an important specimen for serious Buffalo nickel collectors pursuing high-grade examples from the final years of the series. Struck in the traditional 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, this five-cent piece remains a cornerstone issue for type collectors and specialized Buffalo nickel devotees alike.
