Description

1934-D Washington Quarter, Heavy Motto, MS67 PCGS. When the Washington Quarter debuted in 1932 during the Great Depression, coinage demand had plummeted dramatically. Production resumed in 1934 with significant design refinements, particularly to the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST." The Philadelphia Mint produced three distinct varieties that year—Light, Medium, and Heavy Motto—while the Denver Mint utilized only the Medium and Heavy Motto hubs. The 1934-D represents Denver's highest quarter production since 1920, with a mintage of 3,527,200 coins. However, the Heavy Motto variety is notably scarcer than its Medium Motto counterpart and commands a significant premium among collectors. This example is certified by PCGS as MS67, representing exceptional preservation for an issue that saw nearly complete circulation during the economically stressed 1930s. The Heavy Motto is readily identifiable by distinctive diagnostic features: the center peak of the W in "WE" extends higher than the outer legs, the vertical serif at the base of the G is blunted and thick, and the N in "IN" displays a sharp, upward-angled serif. These characteristics distinguish it from the Medium Motto variety and contribute substantially to its collector appeal. High-grade examples of the 1934-D Heavy Motto are genuinely scarce. Population data reflects only 7 examples graded by PCGS, with just 2 specimens certified in higher grades. This rarity, combined with the coin's historical significance as a pre-WWII key date Washington Quarter, makes it highly desirable to serious collectors. The piece represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a significant early Washington Quarter in exceptional condition. PCGS Certificate #51293600
