Description

1941 Mercury Dime Proof, PCGS MS-68. This exceptional 1941 Mercury Dime Proof from the Philadelphia Mint represents a premium example of Adolph A. Weinman's iconic design during the brief Proof production window of 1936-1942. The coin exhibits outstanding eye appeal characteristic of the MS-68 grade, with sharp strike details and excellent preservation. PCGS Certificate #57227748 documents this specimen's superior quality, with only 8 coins graded higher across the entire population of 55 certified examples—a testament to its rarity at this elite level. The 1941 Philadelphia Mint Proof Mercury Dimes present a fascinating study in production history. According to numismatic researcher Roger Burdette, the mint executed 29 distinct deliveries throughout the year, with approximately 20% of production rejected during quality control inspections. The final mintage of 16,557 pieces reflects only those specimens that met the mint's exacting standards for Proof coins. The die study reveals that five obverse and six reverse dies were employed, though Cameo contrast is virtually nonexistent for this issue—to date, only a single certified specimen has achieved Cameo designation. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, this dime retains its original weight of 2.5 grams and diameter of 17.9mm with a reeded edge. The MS-68 grade indicates virtually flawless surfaces with only the most trivial imperfections under magnification. The coin's strong market position, reflected in a price guide value of $3,250, underscores its desirability among serious Proof specialists and Mercury Dime collectors alike.
