Description
1938-D/S Buffalo Nickel, FS-511 — PCGS MS68. This exceptional 1938-D/S Buffalo nickel represents one of the most intriguing varieties in the entire Buffalo nickel series. The coin exhibits the distinctive over-mintmark characteristic of this issue, where an S-mintmark was repunched over the original D at the Denver Mint. Since no Buffalo nickels were produced at the San Francisco Mint in 1938, numismatists believe the S-dies were deliberately repunched at Denver, creating this fascinating variety. First documented circa 1961 by collectors Robert Kerr and C.G. Langworthy and subsequently authenticated by the legendary Q. David Bowers, the 1938-D/S has remained a sought-after discovery piece in the Buffalo nickel market. The present example is graded PCGS MS68 (PCGS Certificate #46873727), representing an outstanding specimen of this variety. With only 2 examples graded higher and just 9 total submissions across all grades to PCGS, this coin occupies a rarefied position within the variety's population. The strike is notably sharp with impressive luster characteristic of well-preserved Denver Mint coinage from this era. The coin's technical specifications include the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, weighing 5.0 grams with a diameter of 21.2mm. While the 1938-D/S is not considered extremely rare in absolute terms, the combination of this high grade, strong over-mintmark visibility, and exceptional eye appeal makes this a significant offering for serious Buffalo nickel specialists and variety collectors alike.
