Description
1915-S $20 Gold Double Eagle, PCGS MS66. A handsome example of this popular Saint Gaudens double eagle from the San Francisco mint. This PCGS MS66 specimen (Certificate #57546544) represents the upper echelon of this issue, with only 11 examples graded finer at PCGS out of 262 total submissions. The 1915-S is among the most frequently encountered early issues of the series, benefiting from a substantial mintage of 567,500 pieces and the dispersal of several large hoards since the 1970s. However, Gem examples at the MS66 level are decidedly scarcer, with certified examples in this grade numbering fewer than two hundred across all grading services. This particular coin exhibits the hallmark characteristics of the issue: sharp striking with a broad, square rim and partial wire edge, combined with the excellent luster and rich orange-greenish gold color typical of well-preserved 1915-S specimens. The surfaces display the marked granularity and metal flow patterns frequently observed on this date, lending it authentic period character. Compositionally, the coin contains 90% gold and 10% copper, with a weight of 33.4 grams and lettered edge. The 1915-S remains a cornerstone date for Saint Gaudens collectors seeking quality examples without the premium associated with scarcer mintmarks. This MS66 offering represents a significant opportunity to acquire a high-grade representative of this historically important series.
