Description
1942-S Mercury Dime, FB, PCGS MS68. This exceptional 1942-S dime represents a remarkable example of the Mercury Dime series, struck at the San Francisco Mint during the final years of this iconic design's production. Designed by the acclaimed sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman, the Mercury Dime remains one of America's most beloved twentieth-century coinage types. The specimen offered here has been certified by PCGS as MS68, placing it among the finest known examples of this particular date and mintmark combination. The FB designation indicates fully split and separated horizontal bands on the reverse fasces, a hallmark of sharp, well-preserved strikes that collectors highly prize. With a mintage of 49.3 million pieces, the 1942-S would normally be considered readily available; however, high-grade survivors are surprisingly scarce. This coin's composition of 90% silver and 10% copper ensures both numismatic and intrinsic value. The reeded edge and crisp strike visible on this piece demonstrate the quality of San Francisco Mint production during this period. Population data reveals the significance of this offering: only one example has graded higher at PCGS, with just ten total submissions of this date and mintmark combination. This rarity at the MS68 level makes this an outstanding acquisition for the serious Mercury Dime specialist or advanced collector seeking museum-quality material from the final years of Weinman's design.
