Description

# 1950-D 50C Booker T. Washington Commemorative, MS67 PCGS. A handsome example of this popular commemorative half dollar honoring the renowned educator and civil rights pioneer Booker T. Washington. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1950, this issue represents one of the final years of the Booker T. Washington commemorative series, which ran from 1946 to 1951. Designed by the acclaimed sculptor Isaac Scott Hathaway, the obverse features a portrait of Washington while the reverse displays the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at New York University. This specimen has been graded MS67 by PCGS (Cert. #25654652), indicating a coin of exceptional quality with only light surface marks visible under magnification. The strike is sharp and well-defined throughout, with attractive luster that highlights the obverse portrait and reverse architectural details. At this grade level, the coin displays the kind of eye appeal that appeals to both type collectors and those specializing in commemorative coinage. The 1950-D is a relatively scarce issue with a mintage of just 6,004 pieces, and examples in this grade are particularly elusive. Population data shows only 8 coins graded higher than MS67 across all grading services, with just 43 total graded specimens, underscoring the rarity of well-preserved examples. The coin's 90% silver composition adds intrinsic value, while its historical significance as part of the final years of this beloved commemorative series makes it an attractive addition to any collection of American silver commemoratives.
