Description
1934-D Washington Quarter, Heavy Motto, MS67 (PCGS #51293600). The 1934-D Washington Quarter represents a significant early-date silver quarter from the Denver Mint. Struck during the Great Depression when coin production had dramatically contracted, the 1934-D marked Denver's highest quarter output since the 1920 Standing Liberty Quarter. Despite a mintage of 3,527,200 coins, the economic pressures of the era forced nearly the entire issue into immediate circulation, leaving only modest numbers preserved in high grades by collectors. This example exhibits the Heavy Motto variety, the scarcer of the two motto types produced at Denver in 1934. The Heavy Motto is characterized by thick, bold lettering in the "IN GOD WE TRUST" inscription, with diagnostic features including the elevated center peak of the W in "WE" and the blunted, thick vertical serif at the base of the G. The Denver Mint utilized only Medium and Heavy Motto hubs for its 1934 production; no Light Motto examples are known for this mintmark, making the Heavy Motto variety particularly desirable to specialized collectors. Graded MS67 by PCGS (Certificate #51293600), this coin represents exceptional preservation for a pre-WWII issue that saw heavy circulation. Population data confirms the rarity of this variety in premium grades, with only one coin graded higher across eight total PCGS submissions. The combination of the Heavy Motto variety, Denver mintmark, and exceptional MS67 grade makes this an important acquisition for Washington Quarter specialists and silver coin collectors seeking scarce Depression-era coinage.
