Description
1890-S Morgan Dollar, PCGS MS-66. A handsome example of this popular San Francisco Mint issue, graded PCGS MS-66 (Certificate #56516046). The 1890-S is among the more available Morgan dollars in Mint State grades, particularly in the MS-63 to MS-65 range, making this MS-66 specimen notably scarcer. With a total mintage of 8,230,373 coins, the date saw substantial coinage throughout 1890, yet many pieces were either lost to circulation or melted under the 1918 Pittman Act. The 1890-S benefits from the substantial Treasury releases of the 1940s and 1950s, which dispersed numerous bags into the numismatic market and established its reputation as one of the more obtainable San Francisco issues. This coin exhibits the characteristics typical of well-preserved examples from this mintmark. The strike is sharp with excellent definition, particularly evident in the eagle's breast feathers, and the surfaces display the attractive luster that collectors seek in Morgan dollars of this era. The coin's eye appeal is further enhanced by the absence of significant bagmarks, consistent with its high grade. Population data indicates approximately 72 coins graded finer than this piece, with only 265 examples certified across all grades by PCGS, underscoring the relative scarcity of certified specimens in this grade range. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper with a weight of 26.73 grams and diameter of 38.1 millimeters, this piece represents a classic example of American silver coinage at its finest. An excellent addition for collectors focused on San Francisco Mint issues or seeking a high-grade representative of this readily available but still desirable date.
