Description

1940 10C (Dime), Mercury Type, FB Designation, PCGS MS-68. An exceptional example of the classic Mercury dime series, this 1940 Philadelphia mint dime displays the distinctive Full Bands (FB) designation, indicating sharp, well-defined horizontal lines on the fasces reverse—a hallmark of superior striking and preservation. Struck from a mintage of 65,350,000 pieces, this date is relatively common in circulated grades but becomes increasingly scarce in premium Mint State conditions with full bands detail. Graded PCGS MS-68 (Certificate #45989924), this specimen represents an outstanding example of the issue. The coin exhibits brilliant luster, sharp strike definition throughout, and excellent eye appeal befitting the grade. The FB designation is particularly noteworthy, as many examples from this high-mintage date fail to achieve the requisite clarity on the reverse fasces bands. Population data reflects the rarity of this grade level, with only 12 specimens graded higher by PCGS and just 46 total examples certified, underscoring the scarcity of MS-68 FB examples. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, this dime retains the precious metal content that makes pre-1965 United States dimes attractive to both type collectors and precious metals investors. The sharp reeding on the edge remains crisp and well-defined, further testament to the coin's exceptional preservation since its 1940 striking.
