Description

1882 Philadelphia Gold Dollar, PCGS MS-68. This exceptional 1882 Gold Dollar represents one of the finest examples of this scarce Philadelphia Mint issue. Struck in 90% gold with a reeded edge, this diminutive coin weighs just 1.7 grams and measures 14.3mm in diameter. Designed by the renowned James Barton Longacre, the piece exemplifies the artistry of mid-19th century American coinage. The Philadelphia Mint produced only 5,000 examples of this date, making it more elusive than the preceding 1880 and 1881 issues. The offered example has been certified by PCGS as MS-68, placing it among the finest known survivors of this issue. Population data reveals only a single specimen graded higher, with just 17 examples certified across all grades by PCGS. This remarkable scarcity in high grades reflects the fact that virtually every known specimen exists in uncirculated or proof condition, with most approaching gem quality. The MS-68 designation underscores the exceptional preservation of this particular coin. The 1882 Gold Dollar remains a key date in the Liberty Gold Dollar series (1849-1889), highly sought after by specialists and type collectors alike. Its combination of limited original mintage, extreme rarity in gem grades, and strong eye appeal makes this an outstanding opportunity to acquire a significant piece of American gold coinage.
