Description
# 1908 $20 St. Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, No Motto, Wells Fargo Discovery. NGC MS70 | Certificate #1003902. ---. This exceptional 1908 $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle represents one of the finest examples from the legendary Wells Fargo Discovery hoard, a seminal find in American numismatic history. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint without the motto "In God We Trust," this coin exemplifies the early design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' iconic Liberty and Eagle motif. The coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighs 33.4 grams, and features a lettered edge characteristic of this prestigious series. In the early 1990s, dealer Ron Gillio discovered approximately 9,900 remarkably preserved 1908 No Motto Saints in a Wells Fargo bank vault in Las Vegas, fundamentally changing the market for this date. This hoard contained thousands of superb gems, nearly 1,000 coins graded MS67, over 100 examples certified MS68, and an unprecedented ten coins graded MS69 by PCGS—the only Saints ever to achieve this grade at that time. These ten specimens represented virtually perfect gems, with only three rising to truly exceptional levels of perfection. Graded NGC MS70, this coin stands among the finest St. Gaudens Double Eagles ever certified and represents the pinnacle of the Wells Fargo Discovery. The MS70 designation indicates complete absence of wear and eye-visible imperfections, making this an extraordinary example of the series. With a current price guide value of $4,250 and only 974 coins graded higher across all grades in the NGC population report, this piece represents a significant opportunity for the serious collector of United States gold coinage.
