Description
1943-P Jefferson Five Cents, PCGS MS-67 (Full Steps). This exceptional 1943-P nickel represents the wartime coinage era when the United States temporarily modified the composition of five-cent pieces to preserve nickel for military applications. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint during a year of massive production (271,165,000 pieces minted), this example has achieved the impressive grade of MS-67 with Full Steps designation, placing it among the finest survivors of this common date. The coin exhibits the distinctive composition mandated during World War II: 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese—a composition that would be used only from 1942 through 1945. Designed by Felix Schlag, the obverse and reverse display the sharp striking and luster characteristic of high-grade examples from this period. The Full Steps designation indicates exceptional strike quality and eye appeal, with clearly defined architectural details on Monticello's facade. Population data reflects the relative availability of this issue in gem grades, with 51 total PCGS submissions and only 10 examples graded higher than this specimen's MS-67 level. This particular piece (PCGS Certificate #58471320) offers both the historical significance of wartime coinage and the collector appeal of a carefully preserved gem example. An excellent addition for specialists focused on Jefferson nickels, wartime coinage, or high-grade type coins.
