Description

1966 5C SMS, CA. This exceptional 1966 Jefferson nickel represents a significant example from the Special Mint Set (SMS) program, graded NGC MS-68 with certificate number 8294493034. The SMS issues of the mid-1960s are highly sought after by collectors, as these coins were produced with special care and distinct striking characteristics that set them apart from standard circulation coinage. The SMS nickels from 1966 are particularly notable for their superior finish and striking quality compared to their business strike counterparts. This specimen's MS-68 grade indicates exceptional preservation with only the most minor imperfections visible under magnification, placing it among the finest examples of this issue. The lustrous surfaces and sharp details characteristic of SMS coinage are well-preserved on this piece. As part of the 1966 SMS program, this nickel represents an important chapter in United States mint production history. These sets were produced in limited quantities and have become increasingly difficult to locate in premium grades, making high-quality examples such as this highly desirable to serious collectors of Jefferson nickels and mid-century U.S. coinage.
