Description

1883-CC Morgan Dollar, PCGS MS65. This 1883-CC $1 represents one of the most frequently encountered dates from the Carson City Mint, struck during a year of substantial production totaling 1,204,000 pieces. Designed by George T. Morgan, this silver dollar is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams with a reeded edge and diameter of 38.1mm. The coin's availability in high grades stems from the discovery of large quantities of full Treasury bags in the 1960s, which were subsequently distributed by the General Services Administration in the late 1970s and early 1980s to dealers and collectors. The present example has been certified by PCGS as MS65 (Certificate #61847753), representing a solid Gem Mint State grade. The 1883-CC is noted for its consistently strong strikes and deep, frosty luster, qualities that are well-represented across the population. With a PCGS population showing 4,329 examples certified in grades higher than MS65 out of 10,238 total submissions, this date remains common in Mint State condition, though MS65 represents a desirable grade for the issue. Prooflike and Deep Mirror Prooflike variants exist but are considerably scarcer, representing approximately one-seventh of the total population. Standard business strikes of this date are readily obtainable and offer collectors an accessible entry point to Carson City coinage.
