Description

1884-CC Morgan Dollar, PCGS MS-66. This Carson City-minted Morgan Dollar represents one of the most sought-after mintmarks in the entire series, despite the 1884-CC being relatively common in absolute terms with a mintage of 1,136,000 pieces. The CC mintmark commands a substantial collector premium, making even circulated examples desirable to numismatists. The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, with a weight of 26.73 grams and diameter of 38.1mm, struck to the exacting standards established by designer George T. Morgan. The present example has been certified by PCGS as MS-66, placing it solidly in the gem category and well above the typical grades encountered for this date. The vast majority of 1884-CC dollars that entered the collector market derive from the Treasury hoard discovered in the 1960s and dispersed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. While gems are plentiful relative to lower grades, MS-66 examples represent a meaningful step up in the grading scale, with only 681 examples graded higher by PCGS out of 2,300 total certified specimens. MS-67 examples become noticeably scarce, with the finest known examples grading MS-68. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a premium example of one of the most popular Carson City dollars among collectors, combining both historical significance and numismatic appeal in a well-preserved state.
