Description

1883-CC Morgan Dollar, PCGS MS66. This 1883-CC $1 represents one of the most commonly encountered Carson City Mint dollars, a result of the extraordinary Treasury vault discoveries of the 1960s. Large quantities of full bags containing $1,000 face value were found in government vaults and subsequently distributed by the General Services Administration in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Despite this abundance in the marketplace, the present example has achieved the desirable MS66 grade, placing it above the typically encountered MS64 population that dominates this issue. The coin exhibits the strong strike and deep, frosty luster characteristic of 1883-CC dollars. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper with a weight of 26.73 grams, this piece displays the classic design by George T. Morgan that defined the Morgan dollar series from 1878-1921. The reeded edge and 38.1mm diameter are consistent with standard specifications for the denomination. With a mintage of 1,204,000 pieces, the 1883-CC remains readily available in Mint State grades through MS67+, though the present MS66 example sits comfortably above the most frequently seen MS64 designation. PCGS population data indicates 2,756 total graded examples with 945 certified in higher grades, reflecting the relative accessibility of quality examples. The coin is offered with PCGS certification number 25667836.
