Description
1944-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar, PCGS MS67. This exceptional 1944-D half dollar represents a premium example of one of the more challenging dates in the Walking Liberty series. Struck at the Denver Mint during the final years of World War II production, this coin exhibits the strong strike and exceptional luster characteristic of the best examples from this issue. The coin displays the fantastic white frosty luster frequently encountered with 1944-D specimens, a hallmark of quality that collectors actively seek. Graded PCGS MS67 (Certificate #38962021), this coin ranks among the finest examples certified, with only 70 examples graded higher across all services. Of the 431 total specimens graded by PCGS, this piece occupies the upper echelon of the population, representing approximately the top 16% of all certified examples. The 1944-D, while not as scarce as the low-mintage war-year issues of 1941-1943, is notably more elusive in gem condition than its immediate successors of 1945 and 1946, making quality examples increasingly difficult to locate. The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighs 12.5 grams, and measures 30mm in diameter with a reeded edge. Designed by the renowned Adolph Alexander Weinman, this specimen exemplifies the artistic merit and technical excellence of the Walking Liberty design. With a mintage of 9,769,000 pieces, the 1944-D's scarcity in high grades makes this MS67 example a worthwhile addition to any advanced Walking Liberty collection.
