Description

1884-CC Morgan Dollar, PCGS MS-66. This 1884-CC Morgan Dollar represents a significant offering from one of the most popular mintmarks in the entire Morgan Dollar series. Struck at the Carson City Mint during a year of substantial production (1,136,000 pieces), this coin bears the highly desirable CC mintmark that commands a substantial collector premium despite the relatively high original mintage. The coin is graded PCGS MS-66, placing it solidly in the gem category and well above the typical grades encountered for this date. The 1884-CC is notable for its complex supply history. The majority of surviving examples entered the numismatic market through a Treasury Department hoard discovered in the 1960s and dispersed to collectors during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Most specimens grade MS-63 or MS-64, making higher grades increasingly scarce. The gem category (MS-65 and above) represents a meaningful step up in rarity, with MS-67 examples becoming quite difficult to locate. According to PCGS records as of March 2011, only three examples have achieved the MS-68 designation, making this MS-66 a desirable middle-ground piece for the serious collector. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, this coin displays the classic design by George T. Morgan and maintains the standard specifications of the series: 26.73 grams and 38.1mm diameter with a reeded edge. With a current price guide value of $1,250, this PCGS MS-66 example (Certificate #56552435) offers strong appeal to both Morgan Dollar specialists and collectors seeking quality Carson City coinage.
