Description

1936-S Buffalo Nickel, PCGS MS-67. This exceptional example of the 1936-S nickel represents a significant find for Buffalo nickel specialists. Struck at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of 14,930,000 pieces, the 1936-S is common in circulated grades but becomes increasingly scarce in Mint State condition. This PCGS-certified MS-67 specimen (Cert. #49470781) places it among the finest known, with only 31 examples graded higher by PCGS out of 145 total submissions. The coin exhibits the hallmark characteristics that make San Francisco Mint Buffalo nickels particularly desirable. The strike is notably sharp for a product of this mint facility, and the luster displays the characteristic grey brilliant patina typical of 1936-S examples. Designed by the renowned James Earle Fraser, the obverse and reverse details remain crisp and well-defined, showcasing the artistic merit of this classic American series. The 1936-S represents a key date when seeking high-grade examples of the non-variety issues from the final years of Buffalo nickel production (1936-1938). With only a small percentage of the original mintage surviving in Gem Mint State condition, this offering provides a rare opportunity to acquire a premium example of this popular series. The PCGS MS-67 grade reflects strong eye appeal and exceptional preservation for this issue.
