Description

1887 Morgan Dollar, Philadelphia Mint, PCGS MS-67. This exceptional example of the 1887 Morgan dollar represents one of the most significant years in the series, setting a production record that would stand until 1921. The Philadelphia Mint struck an impressive 20,290,000 pieces, utilizing 55 obverse and 54 reverse dies in the process. This particular specimen has been graded PCGS MS-67, placing it among the finest examples certified, with only 53 coins graded higher across the entire population of 359 certified pieces. The 1887 is recognized as the most plentiful Morgan dollar of the early period (1878-1904), with millions of Mint State examples surviving today. The vast quantities produced were largely destined for storage in Treasury vaults, where they remained for decades before periodic releases between 1938 and the early 1960s. Notable hoards, including the Continental-Illinois Bank collection containing an estimated 1,000 original bags of brilliant Uncirculated dollars, have further ensured the availability of high-grade examples. Despite the common nature of the issue, cherry-picking for superior quality remains rewarding, as most coins display average striking characteristics with satiny rather than deeply lustrous luster. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper with a weight of 26.73 grams and diameter of 38.1mm, this coin exhibits the classic specifications established by designer George T. Morgan. The reeded edge and Philadelphia mintmark are clearly evident. While many 1887 dollars exist in MS-66 and MS-67 grades, this certified example represents an attractive representative of the issue at this premium level, suitable for both type collectors and those seeking a high-quality example of one of the most produced Morgan dollars.
