Description

1886 Morgan Dollar, Philadelphia Mint, PCGS MS-67. This exceptional example of the record-breaking 1886 Philadelphia Mint coinage represents one of the most prolific silver dollar issues of the entire Morgan series. The Philadelphia Mint produced an unprecedented 19,963,000 circulation strike dollars this year, a production record that would be surpassed only by the 1887 issue. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper with a weight of 26.73 grams and reeded edge, this coin exhibits the technical specifications standard to the Morgan Dollar series designed by George T. Morgan. Graded PCGS MS-67, this piece ranks among the finest examples certified, with only 214 coins graded higher across the entire population of 774 examples. While 1886 Philadelphia dollars are notably common in circulated grades and frequently encountered in Mint State through MS-65, achieving the MS-67 designation places this coin in an elite tier of quality and preservation. The technical grade reflects exceptional eye appeal, sharp striking characteristics, and lustrous surfaces—qualities that distinguish this coin from the many average-strike examples that comprise the bulk of surviving specimens. Historically significant as a product of massive Treasury coinage operations during a period of economic uncertainty, the 1886 issue was subsequently released in large quantities from Treasury vaults during the 1950s and early 1960s. Despite this abundance, high-grade examples with superior eye appeal and striking definition remain desirable to collectors seeking the finest representatives of this iconic date. The combination of rarity in this elevated grade, strong strike, and attractive surfaces makes this an exceptional example of the 1886 Morgan Dollar.
