Description

1922-D Peace Dollar, PCGS MS-65. The 1922-D Peace Dollar represents the first and most prolific coinage from the Denver Mint for this iconic series. With a mintage of over 15 million coins—more than double the next closest Denver Mint Peace Dollar—the 1922-D is the most common of all Peace Dollars struck at that facility. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, this coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams with a diameter of 38.1mm and reeded edge. This PCGS MS-65 example (Certificate #64609602) represents a significant step up in scarcity for the date. While Mint State coins are common overall, the vast majority of survivors cluster in the MS-63 to MS-64 range. At MS-65, the 1922-D becomes genuinely scarce, with only 485 examples graded finer out of 1,458 total PCGS submissions. Higher grades become progressively rare, with MS-66 pieces very scarce and MS-67 examples extremely elusive. Current market valuation places this coin at approximately $575. The 1922-D typically exhibits average striking on the obverse, though the reverse often shows lighter striking at the center, particularly on the eagle's high points—a characteristic result of dies spaced too widely apart. Bagmarks are common on pieces from this prolific mintage, making sharply struck, aesthetically pleasing examples in this grade genuinely desirable to discerning collectors. Despite the date's overall availability, truly choice MS-65 specimens reward careful selection and remain notably harder to locate than their lower-grade counterparts.
