Description
# 1908 $20 Saint Gaudens Gold, No Motto, Wells Fargo Discovery. A Landmark Rarity from the Legendary Wells Fargo Hoard. This exceptional 1908 $20 Saint Gaudens represents one of the most significant discoveries in modern numismatic history. Graded NGC 70 with Certificate #1003901, this coin originates from the celebrated Wells Fargo Discovery—a remarkable hoard of approximately 9,900 pristine No Motto Saints uncovered in the early 1990s by dealer Ron Gillio. The hoard, named for the Las Vegas Wells Fargo bank where initial transactions took place, contained thousands of superb gems and nearly 1,000 coins grading MS67, making it the largest collection of ultra high-quality Saint Gaudens $20 pieces ever discovered. The coin itself displays the distinctive characteristics of Augustus Saint Gaudens' iconic design, struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 4,271,551. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, it retains its original lettered edge and the scarce No Motto reverse variety. The Wells Fargo specimens were notable for their exceptional eye appeal, standing in stark contrast to the typically worn examples of this date normally encountered in the market. Among the most remarkable aspects of this discovery were the ten coins graded MS69 by PCGS—the only Saints ever certified at this elite level. These virtually perfect gems represented the finest examples ever examined by graders at that time. Population data reflects the rarity of this grade, with only 974 examples graded higher than this specimen across all services and 4,547 total certified. At NGC 70, this coin stands as an exceptional representative of the Wells Fargo hoard's finest material, offering collectors a tangible piece of numismatic history and one of the most remarkable treasure discoveries of the modern era.
