Description
# 1908 $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, No Motto, Wells Fargo Discovery. NGC MS70 | Certificate #1003902. This exceptional 1908 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle represents one of the finest examples of Augustus Saint Gaudens' iconic design. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint (mintmark P) and graded NGC MS70, this coin exemplifies the extraordinary quality found within the legendary Wells Fargo Discovery hoard. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this piece weighs 33.4 grams and displays the characteristic lettered edge of the series. The No Motto variety is particularly significant in the Saint Gaudens series, as most circulated examples typically exhibit wear and surface issues. However, this coin emerges from the remarkable hoard discovered in the early 1990s by dealer Ron Gillio, which contained approximately 9,900 coins of exceptional quality—a find that fundamentally changed the market for high-grade Saint Gaudens eagles. The hoard, named for the Las Vegas Wells Fargo bank where initial transactions occurred, yielded thousands of gems graded MS66, nearly 1,000 coins at MS67, and 101 examples at MS68. This particular specimen represents the pinnacle of the discovery, achieving a perfect MS70 grade from NGC. With a mintage of 4,271,551 pieces, this date is relatively available in circulated grades, but gem quality examples—particularly those graded MS70—remain highly sought by advanced collectors. The Wells Fargo Discovery coins are recognized as among the finest Saint Gaudens ever certified, making this an outstanding example of both numismatic significance and investment appeal. Price Guide Value: $4,250
