Description
1943-D Jefferson Five Cents, Full Steps, PCGS MS-67. This 1943-D nickel represents an exceptional example from the wartime coinage era, struck at the Denver Mint during America's production of special composition coins necessitated by World War II. The coin exhibits the distinctive composition of the period: 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese—a temporary departure from the standard nickel composition that lasted from 1942 to 1945. Designed by Felix Schlag, this five-cent piece maintains the iconic Jefferson profile that has graced American nickels since 1938. Certified by PCGS as MS-67 with Full Steps designation (Certificate #54940559), this example demonstrates superior strike quality and preservation. The Full Steps designation is particularly noteworthy for 1943-D nickels, as these coins are renowned for producing exceptional strikes. The population data reflects the quality of this issue: among 571 total PCGS-graded examples, only 144 have achieved higher grades, with Full Steps examples being notably scarce in the finest grades. While the 1943-D is the most common of the wartime silver-composition nickels with a substantial mintage of over 15 million pieces, high-grade Mint State examples with Full Steps designation remain desirable to advanced collectors. The exceptional strike quality characteristic of this date, combined with the MS-67 grade and Full Steps qualification, makes this an attractive specimen for those seeking premium examples of wartime coinage.
